Truth Or Dare...

Not really, but I am curious or perhaps just nosy.

Let me begin...

Like many of my dear stitchy pals I adore such a diversity of cross stitch designers, and even though I have found myself with a rather extensive collection of charts designed by our beloved  "Prairie Schooler," it was when I decided to use some of my Christmas gift money to purchase a particular chart which I had had my eye on for some time, that it came to my attention that many of her charts are retired or OOP, and fetch prices that seem quite a bit higher than the original retail price of said chart.

So, here in lies my question, dear friend, would you pay the inflated asking price for a beloved designer's retired chart, and how much over the original price would you be willing to pay? And, while on the subject, how would you decide that a retired or OOP chart was worth the price?

Of course, I guess this leads to the real question which is, why do some designers retire their charts in the first place, and do they know that once they are retired or OOP that they become so much more valuable to the stitcher....and of course in the end, how can you tell ahead of time which chart is a must have as it is one that is likely to retire and once it is retired is it morally "alright" to pay a seller that price?

So, to start the discussion, I will be honest and tell you, dear friend, that I spent a bit of my Christmas gift money ($12.99) on a retired chart that originally sold for ($6) and I hang my head in shame while at the same time, I adooooore my chart and just haaaaad to have it! You will see that it is included in my 2012 Challenge List, titled "12 Days of Christmas."

As I write this post, I am looking over my shoulder and expecting that the retired chart police may be knocking at my door.

Thanks for stopping by for a visit on another very cold and frosty New England morning, and here's hoping that wherever you find yourself today it is with a beloved chart and a threaded needle.

anything retired by Teresa Wentzler is worth any amount! so yes that would be the designer of choice here( I have nearly every one of her designs) and if you eveah saw the magnitude of the overflowing stash in my cupboard you'd think that I should retire from stitching. Can you say OVERLOAD???

I will go only so far when purchasing OOP charts. I have seen them on ebay for crazy amounts and I think that is nuts. Your 12.99 was a good buy.

As with any 'retired' item, stitching or not, you always pay more.

I don't think that is too much if you loved it. Perhaps when you are finished you can resale or trade it to recoup some costs? Either way, enjoy every stitch.

Brilliant!
Thanks, ladies, you make me feel sooo much better! I was afraid I would find some snowballs being thrown my way for doing it.

It depends on the chart - I know for me if it is something I REALLY want then I have paid far too much for it, but in the end I had what I wanted. The secondary market stands what it can stand so long as people will pay what they will for something out OOP

I think the highest I have ever paid for an OOP chart is $20 on ebay. I don't know that I would ever go much higher than that. I guess it depends on how much I want it. The last couple times that I was looking for a certain OOP chart I posted on the 123 Stitch message board and both times someone has come through for me and I've been able to get the chart a the regular price. Just another option for you if you're looking for something! I think you did well with your $12.99! Happy Stitching!

The highest amount I paid was US $ 115 for 3 oop prairie schooler.charts. On one hand I think I shouldn't spend that much money on obvious overpriced items, but the collector in me is just happy to have these charts.
But some charts I really would love to have. I just lost couple of days an eBay auction for an oop ornament of goode huswife at $36. One side in me tells me to be glad not to have spend that much money for a chart for an ORNAMENT, but the collector in me is saddened to have missed out on the angel of frigging tulips... Lol

I guess I don't look at things like, is it OOP?
OR
How much is it?

I only go by these things...

*how badly do I want it
*will I really stitch it or will it live in my stash forever

If I go a week or so and just can't get the chart off my mind then I know I need to get it!

Hi Karen! I have to agree with the others who base this decision on how badly they want to stitch the chart. There are a couple charts ... PS & BBD ... that I would love to have but the secondary market prices are ridiculous! The BBD chart in particular ... Winter Delivery ... was recently sold on eBay for $75 which was the seller's asking price! I found some of the PS charts on a secondary market site priced over $100! People will continue listing things for these prices as long as there are stitchers out there who will pay them. In the end I feel that there are so many other charts available to enjoy that I can make it through life without paying inflated prices like these. Blessings, Shirlee

ooooo I first read that as $1,299 heheh and thought I ought to have sent a Councillor out ..lol and then re read it ? and thought oooo not that bad a hike from $6.00 you got a fairly good bargain there ... love mouse xxxx

I think you got a bargain and you wanted it so I'd say it was a fair deal, it could have been more !...I like the idea of recouping by selling or trading it on when you are finished, could be an idea for the future.

I guess I base it on how much I want it and is the price within my budget. In these times I am blessed to have extra stash money but my frugal side puts a limit of about $30 on something my heart desires. I do have enough stash for several lifetimes already.

BTW - I did write to Pamela about the price some of her OOP charts are going for last year. This is when I was in desperate need of PS #66) I felt the artist should reap some of the profits instead of someone who happened to have it in their stash. She said she doesn't re-release charts because the older ones because it would be too hard to convert the pattern to the current software she uses. I would be happy with a scan of a chart. Just thought you would like to know her reasoning (although I think it is lame).

Hmm... I guess it depends. Am I buying it to stash or because I want to stitch it. If it's the former then no, if the latter, yes. :)

I tend to be impulsive and HAVE to have it and not look at the price. I look at my credit card bill and say, how did that happen? lol I haven't chased any OOP charts yet but I am sure some day. Sounds like you got a good deal, nowadays a lot of charts are in the $10-20 range.

Well, I happen to own a chart that is OOP and I know that there are people out there that want it (it's my "Do Not Meddle" chart). I guess it would depend on the chart. I would want to make sure if I'm going to pay more for the chart that it's not a rag tag used chart in poor condition.

Catherine said...

I think you did well with your price. I have seen some patterns go for outrageous amounts that I probably wouldn't pay, but then again, I have three growing boys to feed! ;)

Lynn said...

I will and have paid a lot more than I'd like on an OOP chart. Generally the ones I want have a specific meaning to me. I desperately wanted one of the PS Garden Samplers because the verse on it was read at our wedding. Another stitcher loaned me her copy but in the meantime I found one of my own.

I do wish that designers would release some of these once more. I'm sure they'd sell like hotcakes.

There is a limit though. I recently saw one of The Goode Huswife charts sell for over $200 on ebay!! Now that's just plain looney!

An Irish Prayer

May the road rise to meet you,
May the wind be always at your back.
May the sun shine warm upon your face,
The rains fall soft upon your fields.

May green be the grass you walk on,
May blue be the skies above you,
May pure be the joys that surround you,
May true be the hearts that love you.

And until we meet again,
May God hold you in the palm of his hand.

Amen
