Ma's Weekend In Review

What a wonderful weekend it was at The Corner!

I must admit that I was a bit sad, as this was the first New Year's Eve that I can remember without one or both of The Brothers hanging around the house for all or part of the night, not to mention our annual New Year's day meal of cabbage and black eyed peas, but we knew ahead of time that they would not be around this year and so Pa and I planned ahead to stay Up Yonder and spend a quiet weekend ringing in the New Year.

We watched a marathon of Harry Potter DVDs, which were a very special Christmas gift from Big Brother and Daughter In Love.

We went snow shoeing, and as you can see Teagan was much faster than Ma!

I adore snow shoeing!
I spent time stitching up a storm and made some real progress on "January Cottage."

I also worked on my stitching list for 2012, and organized my "needfuls" list to accommodate the awesome sales that were going on throughout the weekend on a few online stitchy stores. I was able to get everything on my list, and even a few items that weren't, including this beauty that I have had my eye on for quite some time but just didn't have the courage to "go for!"

Heaven And Earth Designs "Deck The Halls"
I know!....OMW!....What was I thinking!

I plan to stitch this chart throughout the year, and just take my time as this is my first HAED. I was so excited that I even sent Michele a note letting her know that I was jumping in with both feet!
Did I mention that it has a three page DMC color list?! I will keep you posted, dear friend, on my progress from the first stitch to the last.

On New Year's Day, I made the aforementioned annual dinner of cabbage and black eyed peas.

As a little girl my grandma would saute cabbage with butter and a bit of salt, with cooked egg noodles, the cabbage being a symbol for wealth throughout the New Year, and the noodles just being yummy. This is a popular Hungarian meal that my family still enjoys throughout the year, but especially at New Years. We add a side of black eyed peas for good luck, from our two years living in Texas, where it was a must to eat at least a fork full of these little beans on New Years. I learned to make dirty rice to go along with them but it isn't easy to find the ingredients when you live among the yanks in New England, so plain peas it is.

Does your family have a traditional New Year food or meal, and what is the symbolism?

But I digress...

We finished the day with, what else? Football! But I just happened to have a needle that was just asking to draw a few stitches, and that is what I did.

Thanks for stopping by, dear friend, on this very cold Monday, and here's hoping that your New Years was wonderful and that your year is filled with good luck and happiness.

Teagan wishes this as well!

Wishing you a fantastic 2012. Admiring your snow as well. It's today here so terrible hot that I refuse to leave my place under the airco. Pictures of snow are highly appreciated.
Your dinner looks lovely too.
Love your January Cottage :)

Happy New Year! I enjoyed reading your post. I had not heard of that tradition for new years, but it sounds good, most things with butter are! I remember my Mom making me eat a spoonful of lentils when I was little, for luck. Your 2011 finishes are beautiful, I especially liked the gathering room and hugs and kisses. Teagan is a real cutie in that sweater! Happy New Year!

Happy New Years Ma!

Sounds like you had an awesome day yesterday. That is quite a bit of snow you all have up there. Its really pretty though.

I can't believe you are going to do a HAED for the first time. We were thinking the same! I've never done one either, but for whatever reason this year I feel inspired to at least start one. I haven't purchased the design but the one I'm going towards is a mini design. It still requires about 90 colors though.

Good Luck on yours. :)

Hi, I have been reading your blog for a long time, and always enjoy seeing a new post from you. January Cottage is looking wonderful, and good luck on the HAED! I tried stitching one once--was not successful, but I imagine you will have much success with it, and I will enjoy watching your progress.

An Irish Prayer

May the road rise to meet you,
May the wind be always at your back.
May the sun shine warm upon your face,
The rains fall soft upon your fields.

May green be the grass you walk on,
May blue be the skies above you,
May pure be the joys that surround you,
May true be the hearts that love you.

And until we meet again,
May God hold you in the palm of his hand.

Amen
Rath De' ort!
